Masaledaar Appe | Spicy Mini Appams

Sometimes, when there is extra time on the hand, or we are expecting visitors, I like to make a snack for our evening tea!! Usually, it is something light and salty. At times, its a matter of using the leftovers!!!! Today, it was the latter - I had idli batter left over from the weekend. I decided to make spicy mini-appams using my aebleskiver or appe pan.

Ingredients:
1 cup idli batter
3-4 tbsp water
1 medium onion, chopped fine
2-3 green chilies, chopped fine
8-9 curry leaves, chopped fine
1/2 tsp zeera (cumin seeds)
Salt, to taste
1/2 tsp sambar powder
1/2 tsp haldi (turmeric)
Oil, as needed

Method:
  1. Place the appe pan on the hob, add no more than a drop of oil in each of the indentations in the mould.
  2. When hot, reduce heat to medium.
  3. Mix the idli batter with the water. Blend well. Add the salt, sambar powder, and turmeric.
  4. Next fold in the onions, green chilies, and curry leaves.
  5. Using a tablespoon, pour the batter into each of the moulds of the pan.
  6. Cover and allow to cook for 11/2 - 2 minutes.
  7. Remove cover. Using a bamboo stick, like the kind you get for barbecuing, flip the appe over.
  8. Allow other side to cook for another minute or so.
  9. Remove the appe, serve hot.
As these appe are already spicy, you can serve them directly with tea. There is no need for a chutney or sauce. They are delicious by themselves.

This lovely snack goes to Priya @ Priya's Easy N Tasty Recipes. She is hosting Healing Foods: Onions this month, an event created by Sisri @ Siri's Corner.
